DMPA on Acceptor Body Weight

Abstract

The use of depot medroxy progesterone acetate (DMPA) contraception is the most popular among prospective family planning acceptors, because it is considered practical and easy to obtain in health care settings. However, behind this convenience, it does not mean that it is totally safe for the user, one of which is the increase in body weight for the user, which can affect the health of the acceptor. This research aims to determine the effect on weight gain at the Pekkae Community Health Center, using an analytical survey method, with a cross sectional study approach. The subjects were 62 DMPA user acceptors out of 909 DMPA user acceptors carried out in February-June 2023. The results of univariate analysis showed that 56 acceptors (90.3%) experienced an increase in body weight. Based on the age group in the reproductively safe category, namely 20-35 years old, there were 59 acceptors (95.2%). The results of the bivariate analysis concluded that the use of DMPA contraception had a significant effect on increasing body weight with p value = 0.000 <? 0.05). It is recommended that there is a need to understand DMPA acceptors to learn to regulate their diet regardless of age and to control their body weight regularly every month so that excessive increases can be prevented.
