The Relationship of Maternal Knowledge and Economic Status with Exclusive Breastfeeding at the Health Center Jumpandang Baru Makassar City

Abstract

Mother's milk is the main and first food as a source of nutrition for babies in the early life period, which needs to be obtained especially at the age of the first 6 months without any other additional intake, and continues until the age of 2 years. Low breastfeeding is a threat to children's growth and development. This study aims to identify the relationship between maternal knowledge and economic status with exclusive breastfeeding using an analytical survey research with a Cross Sectional Study approach. The research subjects were mothers who had babies reaching the age of 6-12 months totaling 83 people who were taken by accidental sampling. Data were collected using a research instrument in the form of a questionnaire. The data were then processed and analyzed descriptively and inferentially using the chi-square statistical test. The results of this study obtained a significance value of maternal knowledge with a value of p=0.003 (df=1, CI=95%, RR=6.462, Lower-Upper=1.664-25,085 ) where p<0.05. and the economic status variable obtained a value of p = 0.032 (df = 1, CI = 95%, RR = 2.632, Lower-Upper = 1.076-6.433)) where p <0.05 so it can be concluded that there is a relationship between knowledge and economic status by giving Exclusive breastfeeding at the new community health center in Makassar. It is recommended that health workers can further increase education about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding from an early age to infants without differentiating from any economic class
